The dark blue-purple berries of the elder tree, also known as black elder and European elder, are widely used in Northern Europe to make soups, jams and jellies.
The berries are also used to make a variety of alcoholic beverages, including a juniper-flavored gin called Beers Vlierke.

The berries can be baked in pies and tarts, or rendered into jams, jellies, preserves, and even ketchup. Of course, every country dweller has sampled elderberry wine at some point.

Nutrients such as potassium and phosphorus found in elderberries support body function.
